Ueno Onshi Park, with its rich green in an area of 350,000 square meters, has been known as the place to view cherry blossoms in Tokyo since the Edo Period. At times of blossoming every spring, the scenes of hanami parties as well as daytime viewing and the blossoms are reported on many TV channels and news. The cherry blossoms from the statue of Saigo Takamori to the water fountain are especially overwhelming. 1,500 paper lanterns light up the uncountable cherry trees at night showing another face of the sakura.
