HISTORY
Since the opening of the port in mid 19C, Hakodate has developed as one of the prominent international trade ports of Japan having connections first with the US and soon after with Holland, Great Britain, Russia and France.
Therefore this Hokkaido city has become one of the first cities to get in touch with Western cultures, and the cityscape as well as city culture has a mixed atmosphere of Japanese and Western cultures.
Now the city has sister-city relationships with several cities across the world, and puts great effort in international and intercultural communications to become a truly international tourist city.
