2. Statue of Saigo Takamori
Saigo Takamori was a politician who survived through and more importantly contributed to the country during the turbulent days of the shift from Edo to Meiji (late 19th century). He is also the model for Katsumoto in the film “The Last Samurai” played by Ken Watanabe. The statue is often used as an easy meeting spot in Ueno.
3. Ueno Park and Shinobazuike
In 1873 Ueno Park has been acknowledged as the first park in Japan. Today the park is known as a comprehensive culture area with several museums, botanical gardens, zoo and a temple allowing people to not only appreciate the seasonal beauty of the nature but also to dwell on culture. Cherry blossoms during spring and the Shinobazunoike Pond covered with lotus are famous relaxing spots as well as photography shooting spots.
